Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon to star in Big Little Lies

Earlier this year Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson raised the bar for content on the small screen with the highly received limited series True Detective. Taking a page out of their book are Nicole Kidman & Reese Witherspoon, the latest duo to pair up for a newly announced limited series. Deadline reports that the two Oscar winners are set to star in Big Little Lies, to be written by Emmy winner David E. Kelley.

Big Little Lies is described as a “subversive comedy” that follows three mothers of kindergarteners, whose seemingly perfect lives derail into a classic murder-mystery that takes place during a catastrophic parents’ night at a school fundraiser event.

The project is based on the book of the same name by the Australian author Liane Moriarty (What Alice Forgot, Three Wishes). It was published in July and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman (Blossom Films) and Witherspoon (Pacific Standard) optioned the rights in August. It was originally intended to be turned into a feature film but has since evolved into its current state of a limited series. Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard and Kidman’s Blossom Films have both actively been acquiring rights to literary projects with Pacific Standard just producing Wild and Gone Girl and Blossom The Silent Wife (based upon the best-seller Reconstructing Amelia).

Big Little Lies isn’t yet attached to any particular network but it will soon hit the marketplace and is expected to be shopped to premium cable networks like HBO, Showtime and Starz as well as leading streaming platforms like Amazon, Hulu and Netflix.
