Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures released a statement Boxing Day morning. “Considering the incredibly challenging circumstances, we are extremely grateful to the people all over the country who came out to experience The Interview on the first day of its unconventional release,”

Bruer offered more thanks to audience members, stating “The audience reaction was fantastic — the limited release, in under 10% of the amount of theaters originally planned, featured numerous sell-outs and a first-day gross over $1 million.”

After over a month of ups and downs including, a cyber attack on Sony, hackers threatening 9/11 style attacks on participating theaters and a decision to pull the film from release, The Interview was finally played on over 300 US big screens, selling out numerous independent cinemas.

The Interview is directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and sees Rogen and James Franco leading a cast that also includes Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Randall Park (Sex Tape), Timothy Simons (Veep) and Charles Rahi Chun (Scrubs).
