Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars movie loses its screenwriter

January 10, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Just as original writer Michael Arndt left Star Wars: The Force Awakens, screenwriter Gary Whitta has now departed Disney’s first standalone Star Wars movie, which is being directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla). According to THR, Whitta has completed a first draft of the film and is now moving on to his next project, which could be Fox’s adaptation of the Mark Millar comic book Starlight.

“The year I spent working with Lucasfilm on this Star Wars film has been by far the most rewarding period of my entire career,” said Whitta. “As a lifelong Star Wars fan I’m deeply grateful to have had the rare opportunity to contribute to a new chapter in its ongoing cinematic legacy. The film is going to be amazing.”

“Gary has been a wonderful, inspired contributor and I enjoyed working with him tremendously,” said Edwards. “I’m so grateful for all of his contributions.”

Plot details for the movie are being kept under wraps, with rumours suggesting it could centre on Han Solo, or a group of bounty hunters hired to steal the plans to the Death Star.
