The Expendables 2 director to remake The Blob

January 22, 2015 by William Fanelli

The Blob freaked people out in 1958 as it moved through town devouring everything that crossed its path. I know, sounds scary doesn’t it? Now it’s back to do it all again in a remake of the old sci-fi classic, set to be helmed by The Expendables 2 director Simon West.

West should prove to be a good fit for the material. He not only created the above-mentioned explosive addition to the Sylvester Stallone rampage but he is also responsible for such films as Con Air, When a Stranger Calls and The Mechanic… so yeah he should know how to balance the right amount of action and camp.

The original film follows a mysterious gluey alien life-form that bubbles and oozes its way across Downtingon, Pennsylvania, consuming anything it comes in contact with. It starred Steve McQueen and Aneta Corsaut, and was directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth, who also made 4D Man and Dinosaurus!, before returning to his first love of making religious films.

The Blob also spawned a couple of sequels, one in 1972 called Beware! The Blob and another in 1988 that kept the original film’s title and starred Kevin Dillon.

The upcoming Blob remake will be co-produced by Goldcrest Films with producers Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten (Silent Night). According to Deadline, Jack H Harris (the original 1958 film’s producer) will exec produce and Chris Haney (The Avengers) will handle the oh so-critical VFX.

West produced Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D, which has yet to see a release. His latest film, Wild Card starring Jason Statham, hits theaters later this month.
