BAFTAS 2015: EE Rising Star nominee Gugu Mbatha-Raw talks film in Britain and working with Will Smith

February 9, 2015 by admin

EE Rising Star nominee Gugu Mbatha-Raw faced stiff competition last night for the coveted prize from Shailene Woodley (The Fault in our Stars), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Britain’s own Jack O’Connell (’71), who eventually took home the gold.

Before she went in for the ceremony, Flickering Myth caught up with the actress to talk about the other nominees, working in film in Britian and upcoming projects.

On the competition in the EE Rising Star Award this year:

“Oh gosh, I think everyone in is phenomenal in this category, I really do. I think it’s a great pack and everyone has a phenomenal body of work behind them. It’s quite stiff competition! But I’m honoured, really honoured.”

On opportunities to work on films in America and the UK:

“You know, I go back and forth. I mean I’ve had some wonderful opportunities here. You know, Belle, which was my first lead in a film, was a very British movie. So for me, I like to get the best of both worlds.”

On who she thinks will win Best Film:

“Oh I don’t really know! I loved them all. I really enjoyed Birdman and I thought it was so stylish and kind of unique in the way that it was told.”

On future projects:

“I just finished a project called Concussion with Will Smith which is about the first pathologist who discovered the link between American Football and brain injuries. And I’m about to start work on The Free State of Jones.

On working with Will Smith:

“Amazing. I mean it’s Will Smith! He’s such a pro and a wonderful, open hearted human being and it was wonderful working with him.”
