2015 Tribeca Film Festival announces Audience Award winners

April 27, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

The 2015 Tribeca Film Festival announced its Audience Award winners over the weekend in New York City. Two awards are given for the audience choices – the narrative award and the documentary award.

King Jack, directed by Felix Thompson, was awarded the narrative prize this year, sponsored by AT&T.

Jack is a scrappy 15-year-old kid stuck in a run-down small town. Trapped in a violent feud with a cruel older bully and facing another bout of summer school, Jack’s got all the problems he can handle. So when Jack’s aunt falls ill and his runty younger cousin must stay with him for the weekend, the last thing Jack wants to do is look after him. Unfortunately, no one really cares what Jack wants. Set over a hazy summer weekend, ‘King Jack’ is a tough and tender coming of age story about friendship and finding happiness in rough surroundings.

The documentary award was won by Transfatty Lives, a film by Patrick O’Brien which tells the story of one-time New York DJ TransFatty. O’Brien started the film in 2005, before the DJ was diagnosed with ALS and subsequently only given a maximum of five years to live.

The winners will receive $25,000 in cash prize money.

Runners-up for the prizes were Song of Lahore, directed by Andy Schocken and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, in the documentary award, while Sundance hit Sleeping With Other People was second in the narrative category. Sleeping is directed by Leslye Headland (Bachelorette) and stars Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses 2), Alison Brie (Get Hard), Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation) and Amanda Peet (The Way, Way Back).
