A24’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reimagining finds its director in Curry Barker

April 22, 2026 by Matt Rodgers

A24 are revving up the motor on yet another remake of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre by announcing that Curry Barker is set to head to the Sawyer residence to reskin Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic once again.

Variety reports that the up-and-coming director has been tasked with “reimagining” Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel’s iconic creation. The film isn’t the only Texas Chainsaw project in development either, with the previously reported TV series from Glen Powell, Dan Cohen, and director JT Mollner also currently in the works.

Coming off the back of his $800 debut found-footage film Milk & Serial, Barker is hot property in the horror genre. His buzzy debut feature Obsession is out next month following a $14 million bidding war after it bowed at TIFF, and he’s currently in production on Anything But Ghosts for Blumhouse.

1974’s seminal classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre spawned three sequels in 1986, 1990 and 1995 before the slasher series was rebooted with the Michael Bay-produced The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and its lamentable follow-up The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006). Ol’ Leatherface was back swinging his chainsaw around his head in 2013 with Texas Chainsaw 3D, which was billed as a direct sequel to Hooper’s original, then there was a prequel entitled Leatherface in 2017, before a forgettable requel was lost amongst the Netflix menu in 2022.
