Amazon announces full creative team for The Lord of the Rings TV series

July 28, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It may not be ready to confirm any castings or specific story details just yet, but during its Television Critics Association panel, Amazon has unveiled what may well be a first for any television series – a trailer which highlights the creative team for its hotly-anticipated small screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Along with the previously announced showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek Beyond) and executive producer and director J.A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Amazon has assembled an impressive “Fellowship” of talent whose credits include the likes of Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Stranger Things, Hannibal, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Toy Story 4.

Amazon is reportedly sinking as much as a billion dollars into The Lord of the Rings, making it the most expensive TV series of all time, and while details are scarce we do know that it will serve as a prequel to Tolkien’s epic fantasy saga, taking place during the Second Age of Middle-earth.

Earlier this week, Variety brought us our first piece of casting news on the series, with Australian actress Markella Kavenagh (Picnic at Hanging Rock) reportedly signing on to play a character called Tyra. Now that the creative team is in place, expect to hear plenty more news from Middle-earth over the coming weeks and months…
