Another live-action Hellboy film is in development

February 17, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

You can’t keep a good demon down, because while 2019’s David Harbour-led Hellboy reboot was a critical and commercial disaster, there is enough good will in the tank and money in the bank from Guillermo Del Toro’s take on Mike Mignola’s character for Millennium Media to give it another shot.

Discussing Film reports that Millennium are actively developing a new live-action Hellboy film to be helmed by Brian Taylor, who co-directed another iconic comic book character with ties to fire and brimstone with 2011’s  Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. He was also responsible, along with his directing partner Mark Neveldine, for Crank, Crank: High Voltage, and Gerard Butler action vehicle Gamer.

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and author Christopher Golden are being credited with the story for this reboot, which is rumoured to have the current working title of Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is a 3-issue series that hit the shelves in July 2008. Set in 1956, it puts Hellboy somewhere in the mountains of West Virginia, where he encounters Tom, a man who in his youth sold his soul to a backwoods demon known as the Crooked Man. Together they travel back into the dark heart of the Appalachian mountains to find that demon and see if Tom’s soul can be saved.

There has been no official confirmation, but apparently casting is well underway, with the intention of starting shooting in Bulgaria as soon as April, so expect further developments pretty soon.

Let us know whether you’re excited about a potential return for Hellboy, and who you’d like to see take the horns from atop the heads of Ron Perlman and David Harbour by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
