AR game Ingress heading to Netflix as anime series

July 9, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Variety is reporting that the hit mobile augmented reality game Ingress is heading to Netflix, with the studio ordering an anime series from Fuji TV and Crafter.

The storyline for Ingress: The Animation will overlap with the ongoing narrative of the video game, as well as introducing the upcoming sequel Ingress Prime. It takes place in a universe where exotic matter is leaking into the world through portals, granting people special abilities, and the show will focus on two characters, Makoto and Sarah, with the former able to touch things and see their history, and the latter able to see certain aspects of time and space.

“There will be familiar characters and situations that have become famous in the game, but they will be experienced through a fresh interpretation with new characters, new actors,” said John Hanke of developers Niantic. “Think of it like a reboot of a superhero franchise.”

Both Ingress: The Animation and Ingress Prime are expected to launch in October.
