Argylle fumbles and Lisa Frankenstein is sacked during lowest grossing box office weekend of 2024

It was a depressing few days at the North American box-office over the weekend, with a year-low return of $40 million that not even the Super Bowl excuse could account for.

Ordinarily a quieter weekend, with Sunday takings cratering as the country stands still to watch a sporting blockbuster, there are still plenty of examples of movies making money over the frame; 2009’s Taken opened to $24 million, while the third weekend of Bad Boys for Life did $17.6 million right before the pandemic. Heck, even Death on the Nile debuted with $12.8 million in 2022, and that was against the backdrop of pandemic variants and poor reviews.

Taking the weekend top-spot was Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, which slumped 63% in its sophomore frame with $6.5 million. The $200 million budgeted Apple Original spy-caper has amassed $28.8 million since release, and currently sits on a global cume of $60 million. 

Hoping to shoot down Argylle was Focus Features’ Lisa Frankenstein (read our ★★ review here), but the counter programming didn’t work and Zelda Williams’ teen comedy barely flickered into life with a weekend haul of $3.8 million. 

Jason Statham continued to buzz around the box-office, with The Beekeeper collecting a further $3.4 million in its fifth week of release, and taking its domestic total to an impressive $54 million. The David Ayer-directed action film has now grossed $133 million worldwide.

Theatre chains will take some comfort from the results of the re-release of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which managed to crack the top 10 on its way to $1.66 million. With the sequel due to arrive in a few weeks, the appetite for a return to Arrakis might see the sequel out-perform the projected $65 million opening weekend.
