Barbarian’s Zach Cregger to direct multi-story horror epic Weapons

January 26, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Barbarian was one of the biggest surprises of last year (read our ★★★★ review here), grossing $40 million at the domestic box-office, and heralding the arrival of director Zach Cregger. So it’s little wonder that there’s plenty of excitement surrounding his next project, which has just been announced as Weapons, a multi-story horror epic in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia.

According to The Hollywood Reporter a bidding war was conducted for Weapons, with eight-figure sums being touted, before New Line – the home of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Malignant – emerged victorious.

Barbarian told the story of a young woman who travels to Detroit for a job interview and books a rental home. But when she arrives late at night, she discovers that the house is double booked, and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgement, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

On a budget of $4.5 million the horror film, which is so much more than the above synopsis suggests, made $40 million at the domestic box-office, and while it didn’t get much of an international release, has found an audience on streaming and VOD.

Plot details are light when it comes to Weapons, but the reports states that it is described as an interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia.
