Ben Affleck responds to Batman v Superman criticism, confirms solo movie is titled The Batman

October 3, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Cast your mind back to March of this year, as the reviews starting flooding in for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and poor Ben Affleck found out mid-interview that the critics hadn’t been too kind to Warner Bros.’ big DC Extended Universe release. Within hours, said interview had launched the Sad Affleck meme, as some clever YouTuber decided to intercut quotes from the negative reviews, set to Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’, and the whole thing went viral.

Well, we’re now some six months on from the release of Batman v Superman, and in an interview with Fox 5 to promite his new film The Accountant, Affleck has reflected on the film’s reception, as well as sharing his own thoughts:

“It’s interesting… it was a huge hit movie, more people went to see that than any movie I’ve ever made in my career. It was the biggest hit of my career and then it had a lot of editorial negativity. Fans went, and it got a lot of positive response. It was interesting, that movie, because it was judged not necessarily on execution so much as its tone. People seemed to want to have a lighter tone to the movie, and I thought that was interesting. Tone isn’t a qualitative thing. It’s subjective, right? Some tones resonate with me that might not with you. And the tone of the movie was really parallel to the Frank Miller book [The Dark Knight Returns], which I liked and thought was great. I’m glad that so many people went and so many people liked the movie. I loved it.”

Meanwhile, in a separate interview with the Associated Press, Affleck has confirmed the title of his upcoming solo movie, stating that: “The movie I think is going to be called The Batman. At least that’s what we’re going with now. I might change it… We’re working on the script, the script is going well, I’m really excited about it and I assure you that when anything develops, you’ll hear about it.”

What do you make of The Batman as the title for The Dark Knight’s next solo movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
