Ben Mendelsohn wants to play Doctor Doom, praises him as “the greatest comic character of all time”

November 26, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Although it’s yet to be made official by Marvel, it seems that Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the actor slated to play the lead Skrull villain opposite Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers and Jude Law’s Mar-Vell in 2019’s Captain Marvel.

However, it seems that Mendelsohn has his eye on a different Marvel villain – the biggest of them all, in fact – revealing to the Happy Sad Confused podcast that his dream comic book role in that of Victor Von Doom.

“Doctor Doom is the greatest comic character of all time,” said Mendelsohn. “That’s a great role. The thing that’s appealing about Victor is the damage and trauma, the loss of the family, the wrong done to him and then the takeover, the revenge, and then the protectiveness of Latveria wrapped in that Cold War vibe. There’s something about the combination of that. What actually makes him great is his caring bit.”

As it happens, there may be an opening for a Doctor Doom role in the near future, as 20th Century Fox announced back at Comic-Con that Legion creator Noah Hawley is developing a movie based upon the Latverian ruler. Assuming it goes ahead, Mendelsohn may have some competition though, as his Rogue One co-star and fellow Marvel villain Mads Mikkelsen has already expressed his interest in the part.

Can you see Ben Mendelsohn as Victor Von Doom? If not, who would you cast as the iconic villain? Let us know in the comments below…
