Benedict Cumberbatch to voice the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Trey Parker joins Despicable Me 3

April 14, 2016 by Gary Collinson

During Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s big presentation at CinemaCon, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri dropped a couple of bits of casting news for two of the studio’s upcoming animated projects.

Joining the cast of the animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie is Benedict Cumberbatch, who will lend his voice to the titular character, previously portrayed by Jim Carrey in 2000’s live-action adaptation.

Meanwhile, South Park co-creator Trey Parker is set to play the villain in Despicable Me 3; Parker’s character is called Balthazar Bratt, “a former child star who is obsessed with the character he played in the ’80s.” Steve Carell is back on board as Gru, along with Gru’s charming twin brother.

Also announced was the a new Minions short Mower Minions, which will be attached to The Secret Life of Pets this July.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is set for release on November 10th 2017, while Despicable Me 3 will open on June 30th 2017.
