Last month it was announced that Asher Angel (Andi Mack) has been cast as Billy Batson in Warner Bros.’ DC superhero adventure Shazam, and the young actor has been chatting to Circa News about how he secured the role of the child alter-ego of the original Captain Marvel.
“I was self-taping for it, and then they wanted to call me in for a test,” said Angel. “So I came into Los Angeles, I tested with [director David Sandberg]; it was so much fun. I just felt so comfortable. And the next day I went into Warner Bros. to do one last scene in front of the execs and everyone, and two days later we were leaving to go from LA to Utah and we got the call.”
Angel went on to briefly discuss the story for the movie, adding that: “Shazam is about a little boy named Billy Batson. He’s kind of gone through a hard time, and he finds out he’s capable of this super power. By saying this one word, he can turn into an adult superhero and turn back into Billy Batson.”

Shazam! will see Zachary Levi starring as the titular superhero, with Asher Angel as his young alter-ego Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Grace Fulton as Mary Marvel, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley and Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. The film is set for release on April 5th 2019.
