Cathy Yan, the director of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), says that the film is not a team-up film nor ‘The Harley Quinn Movie’.
After the success of Joker, one of the next films on the agenda for DC is Birds of Prey, which sees Harley Quinn return after last being seen in the unpopular Suicide Squad.
The film sees Harley and a group of female DC heroes joining forces to fight the villain Black Mask but according to director Cathy Yan (via ScreenRant), the film shouldn’t be seen as either a team-up or Harley Quinn movie.
Yan says Birds of Prey isn’t “The Harley Quinn Movie. It’s truly an ensemble film, it’s not even a team. You see them as a team right now, but we really spend time with each of these women, and they are very much the protagonists in the film.”
Yan goes on to say that the film actually has “five protagonists” so the focus shouldn’t solely be put on Harley.

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is directing Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain, Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask, Chris Messina (Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz, Ali Wong (Black Box), Robert Catrini (Jack Reacher: Never Go Back), Steven Williams (The Chi), Dana Lee (Dr. Ken), Francois Chau (The Expanse, The Tick) and Matthew Willig (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). It is set for release on February 7th 2020.
