Blue Beetle returns to DC Studios with animated series

June 15, 2024 by EJ Moreno

If you loved what director Angel Manuel Soto was able to do with Blue Beetle in 2023’s live-action film, the future is looking bright.

Deadline confirmed that Blue Beetle’s story will continue into the new DC Universe, but this time, he’ll enter the world of animation. Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are reportedly currently developing an animated series.

Miguel Puga began working on the animated adventures of Jaime Reyes last year, where he’ll serve as the project’s showrunner and director. Cristian Martinez is set as the writer, with Angel Manuel Soto and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer on board as EPs.

One thing that’s not set in stone is the return of the main cast. The cast of the film, including the titular hero himself, Xolo Maridueña, are working things out, and Deadline notes that DC Studios “has received a positive response regarding returns.”

We’d see the animated series build out on what was started in 2023’s Blue Beetle but will begin its own path. This could also see the character (and Maridueña) return to the big screen at some point in the future.

Blue Beetle was received well by critics, but only brought in $131 million worldwide against a production budget of $104–125 million, which made it the lowest-grossing film in the DCEU. The film also stars George Lopez, Adrianna Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Elpidia Carrillo, Harvey Guillén, Raoul Trujillo, and Becky G as the voice of Khaji-Da.

Stay tuned for more news, including the possible return of the cast, at Flickering Myth.
