Box office misfire Strange World gets Christmas release on Disney+

December 13, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Following its disappointing run at the worldwide box-office, Disney will be hoping that more people journey to Strange World now that they’ve announced a December 23rd Disney+ release date for the family adventure flick.

With Encanto ($256 million worldwide) and Raya and the Last Dragon ($130 million worldwide) posting admirable results at very different stages of the pandemic, before being made available to stream on Disney+, the Mouse House would have been hoping for similar results for Strange World, even with a pre-planned truncated theatrical window. However, just twenty days into its global rollout and Strange World has made a meagre $53 million at the box-office, leading to reports that the film could lose as much as a $147 million for the studio.

They’re in their element when exploring this world…

We said that “Strange World gets lost in the ordinary for far too long” in our ★ ★ ★ review (which you can read here). Let us know whether you’re going to move it to the top of your watch list when it lands on Disney+ this Christmas by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

The original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest—and by far— most crucial mission.

The film features the voice talents of Jake Gyllenhaal, Gabrielle Union, Alan Tudyk, Dennis Quaid, Lucy Liu, and Jaboukie Young-White.

Strange World is currently in cinemas and lands on Disney+ December 23, 2022.
