Bruce Timm’s Batman: Caped Crusader animated series gets first look

May 9, 2024 by Ricky Church

After years of development and a near-cancellation before its move to Amazon Prime, Entertainment Weekly has revealed the first look at Batman: Caped Crusader, the upcoming animated series set in Gotham City from Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm and James Tucker. Check out the images of Batman, Catwoman, Commissioner Gordon, Harley Quinn and Clayface below…

Unlike Timm’s previous legendary series with the Dark Knight, where its design was heavily influenced by film noir and 1940s – 50s visuals, Batman: Caped Crusader is set entirely in the 1940s and draws from the earliest Batman comics, including the first looks for Catwoman and Clayface.

One of the biggest changes, however, is Harley Quinn who is reimagined as an Asian American and is without her partner/boyfriend The Joker. Instead, Harley Quinn remains a psychiatrist who is treating Bruce Wayne during the day and then dons her own costume at night to commit crime.

Batman: Caped Crusader was announced in 2021 and originally set to air on Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service formerly known as HBO Max. However, due to WBD’s numerous cost-cutting measures from its president David Zaslav, which has included cancelling completed films like Batgirl, Scoob Holiday Haunt and Coyote vs. Acme and several other films and TV series to use as tax write-offs, Batman: Caped Crusader was one of the many shows taken off Max’s docket. Thankfully though, it found a new home when Amazon MGM stepped in and picked it up.

As of now the voice cast has not been announced, but the series is set to premiere on Prime on August 1st.
