Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator teases Part 4, says The Crown and H.P. Lovecraft are influences

January 29, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, has teased what’s coming in part 4 of the show.

Part 3 of Netflix’s teen horror series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has just arrived and discussion of what is coming in part 4 has already begun. Season three teases the arrival fo the horrifying Eldritch Terrors, who are set to play a big part next time around.

Creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has spoken to The Wrap about what influences will be seen in part 4 and not surprisingly, H.P. Lovecraft (who popularised the cosmic horror genre and Eldritch monsters) is among them:

“I think one of the things that’s really fun in Part Four is we play a little bit like a demonic version of The Crown, with a lot of palace intrigue and a lot of jockeying for power between Lucifer and Madam Satan/Lilith and Sabrina. So that’s something we explore. But the power struggle is mainly between Lilith and Lucifer. And that’s kind of their big story even from the beginning of the series, this idea of power between the two of them. And Sabrina is caught in the middle of it, and now Satan’s unborn baby is part of that as well.

“One of my favorite horror writers is H.P. Lovecraft, and there’s a definite H.P. Lovecraft vibe to Part Four and we’re taking very, very old primal ideas of horror and fear and unleashing them on Sabrina, on the Spellmans, and on Greendale. And Greendale becomes a battleground for this really epic battle between evil and good and horror and sanity and it’s huge, it’s big.

“At the end of the season, Father Blackwood says he’s unleashed the ‘Eldritch Terrors’ and those are kind of our threats in Part Four. So each episode has a Big Bad that represents this primal terror, this primal fear. So we see Blackwood ascend a little bit more again to the level he was around Season One as a threat, because of what he’s unleashed.”

This will all surely be music to the ears of Sabrina fans and those of classic cosmic horror. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before part 4 is with us.

“Part Three finds Sabrina reeling from the harrowing events of Part Two. Though she defeated her father Lucifer, the Dark Lord remains trapped within the human prison of her beloved boyfriend, Nicholas Scratch. Sabrina can’t live with herself, knowing that Nick made the ultimate sacrifice and is suffering, burning in Hell under Madam Satan’s watchful eye. So with an assist from her mortal friends, “The Fright Club” (consisting of Harvey, Rosalind, and Theo), Sabrina makes it her mission to free him from eternal damnation and bring him back into her arms. However, the Dark Lord’s unseating has sent shockwaves through the realms—and, with no one on the throne, Sabrina must assume the title of “Queen” to defend it against a challenger, the handsome Prince of Hell Caliban. Meanwhile, in Greendale, a mysterious carnival rolls into town, bringing with it a threat to the Spellmans and the coven: A tribe of pagans looking to resurrect an ancient evil…”

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Parts 1,2 and 3 are available now on Netflix.
