Chris Hemsworth shares details on Warlord Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

December 3, 2023 by Ricky Church

With the trailer for George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga taking the internet by storm, Chris Hemsworth has revealed details on his villain Warlord Dementus and the role he plays in shaping Anya Taylor-Joy’s young woman into the fierce Furiosa Charlize Theron portrays in Fury Road.

At CCXP where the trailer was revealed, Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth spoke to the audience about what to expect from the full throttle prequel. Hemsworth’s Dementus leads a tribe called the Biker Horde as its chieftain Warlord Dementus. Of his character, Hemsworth said “He’s a complicated individual, the character I play. He’s a very violent, insane, brutal person that is born from the Wasteland, which is the world where the Mad Max saga takes place. He’s a product of his environment. There’s an intensity to him, there’s a brutality. He’s been birthed into a space where it’s kill or be killed, and he’s learned to rule with an iron fist.”

Hemsworth went on to say there is more to Dementus than just his violent nature, revealing a cunning and manipulative mind capable of gathering so many followers. “There’s a charisma to him. It’s a very manipulative charisma. This is something we talked about a lot in this film. In order to have people follow this character, there needed to be something for them to latch onto. He has the answers as far as, ‘Here’s the reason for your problems, here’s the individual you need to blame, follow me and I will lead you onto higher ground.’ It was a lot of fun to play with, it’s something very different that I hadn’t experienced before.”

Charlize Theron portrayed Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road. It has been a role many have agreed is one of her best performances throughout her career. Furiosa was a general under the warlord Immortan Joe and betrayed him by freeing his child-bearing wives to freedom. Furiosa will explore her backstory and how she first joined up with Immortan.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Last Night in Soho), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Alyla Browne (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart) and Tom Burke (The Lazarus Project).

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is set for release on May 24th 2024.
