Christian Bale teams with Edgar Allan Poe in The Pale Blue Eye trailer

October 27, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

Netflix has released the first trailer for The Pale Blue Eye, the gothic mystery thriller from director Scott Cooper which is based on Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name.

Set in 1830, the film follows detective Augustus Landor (Christian Bale) as he is hired to investigate the murder of a cadet who, hindered by the military academy student’s code of silence, enlists the help of one of their own – a young cadet named Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling). Watch the trailer below…

West Point, 1830. In the early hours of a gray winter morning, a cadet is found dead. But after the body arrives at the morgue, tragedy becomes savagery when it’s discovered that the young man’s heart has been skillfully removed. Fearing irreparable damage to the fledgling military academy, its leaders turn to a local detective, Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), to solve the murder. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, Landor enlists the help of one of their own to pursue the case, an eccentric cadet with a disdain for the rigors of the military and a penchant for poetry — a young man named Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).

Joining Bale and Melling in the cast are Gillian Anderson (The Crown), Timothy Spall (Spencer), Robert Duvall (The Judge), Toby Jones (First Cow), Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody), Charlotte Gainsbourg (The Accusation) Harry Lawtey (Industry), Simon McBurney (Carnival Row), Hadley Robinson (Moxie), Joey Brooks (Molly’s Game), Brennan Keel Cook (Encounter), Gideon Glick (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus), Matt Helm (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Steven Maier (The Plot Against America) and Charlie Tahan (Ozark).

The Pale Blue Eye arrives in select cinemas this December, and on Netflix on January 6th.
