Co-op horror Backrooms Media arrives on Steam Early Access

September 11, 2024 by Andrew Newton

Players can today enter into the eerie world of the Backrooms as Backrooms Media arrives on Steam Early Access.  Inspired by the Backrooms creepypasta, Backrooms Media is the work of solo developer Patrik Nagy and challenges players to work with friends to explore an endless, eerie locale that exists outside of reality.  A new Early Access release trailer (see below) provides a peek into the diverse rooms and corridors that await.

If you’ve never heard of the Backrooms, they date from an anonymous 4chan post back in 2019 all about ‘disquieting images’ and photos that evoke feelings of both familiarity and yet also unease. The image in the post was of a large mustard-yellow room lit by fluorescent lights and to say it resonated with the online community is an understatement. In the five years since it was first posted, the Backrooms has been expanded to become a widely recognised urban legend.

In Backrooms Media players will enter this terrifying labyrinth of eerie, endless spaces, rooms and corridors and do their best to avoid the lurking horrors that call this realm home. Players can team up with their friends and navigate the labyrinth of rooms and passageways to find an escape route, and will be able to use proximity chat to discuss their findings, strategies and ensure whatever entities are out there don’t find them.

Featuring:

  • Play alone in single player or face the endless unease with others in online co-op.
  • Proximity voice chat will allow players to hear each other while not alerting any horrors lurking nearby.
  • Hyper-realistic graphics powered by Unreal Engine 5.
  • An in-game editor that allows players to create their own Backrooms levels and share them with the community.
  • Nostalgic VHS-style visuals.

Since Patrik began developing the game, Backrooms Media has become something much bigger and captivating, and now it’s out on Steam Early Access. Players who purchase before 24th September will be able to explore this terrifying realm with 20% off.
