Combat and terrain changes coming in 7 Days to Die – Alpha 17

February 23, 2018 by Andrew Newton

The wonderful Joel Huenink (AKA Madmole) of The Fun Pimps reveals yet another video updating us with new features coming to Alpha 17 of 7 Days to Die.  This latest video shows off some of the changes being made to combat plus a glance at improvements that are being made to terrain.  Alpha 17 update videos are coming more regularly now and it is certainly beginning to look better than we could have hoped for.  Watch the new video below…

Starting off the video, Joel introduces us to some changes coming to combat, particularly with the shotgun.  General reloading of the shotgun will be much faster and look a lot smoother than the current reloading animation, however, should your character break their arm then reloading becomes painfully slow.  That’s not the only change to ranged combat weapons though; when firing the bow and arrow (and I assume the crossbow) arrows will now stick into the target allowing you to see exactly where you have hit the zombie.  There are also future plans for seeing arrows attach to terrain, structures etc.

Close range combat will also see improvements with two different strength attacks.  Using the left mouse button will do a swift whack which will use little stamina whilst the right mouse button will pack a more heftier wallop but use significantly more stamina.  The right mouse button will become the main button for power attacks.

Finally, Joel chats about some of the changes to terrain and the different tools that they want to start using and shows a screen of a new Splat Map terrain shader which will give the terrain a more natural look and remove many of the unnatural features that make an appearance such as zig zags on winding roads etc.

Although more content for Alpha 17 is being revealed don’t go expecting a release date any time soon, there’s still plenty of work to do and I’m sure the team have many more improvements/new features to add in.  In the meantime, let us know what you think in the comments below.
