Comic Book Review – Chew #51

October 28, 2015 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews Chew #51…

Hey, remember when DC did “One Year Later” and it was the greatest, most creative, and most revolutionary thing in comics EVER? We thought long and hard about how we could do something that awesome, and we came up with something TWICE as amazing. That’s right! “Two Years Later…” Presenting a bold new chapter in CHEW, which just so happens to be the FINAL chapter. “The Last Suppers,” Part 1. The countdown begins.

It’s been a while; 3 months to be exact, which seems forever in comic book time. But, apparently, we’ve jumped ahead 2 years in the story. And then another year. Then 3. Then 5. Then “many, many years later.” I don’t really know what to say.

We know Mason kisses Olive on the forehead in a sweet parting moment before we jump ahead in time and see Amelia as a best-selling author (knocking Chow off the list, even though apparently he toppled Saga’s record!). I honestly don’t know what’s happening here and how this sets anything up because its the beginning of a new story arc (possibly the second to last story arc of the book) but I know it features Olive as the main character, which isn’t a bad thing. I think her creation really renewed Chew in a few good ways; giving his story more meaning, showing a different way for the Cibopaths to go, and just being a sympathetic , strong female who can take care of herself.

The jokes are back, the background signs are all here (and un-cross your fingers, the park is NEVER safe!), and there’s a full-blown ad for a new stuffed doll from the Chew line. It’s comical, it’s innovative, it’s a bit trolling and it’s Chew. Welcome back; and remember, no chicken.

Rating: 7/10
