Comic Book Review – Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins 3 #1

February 14, 2021 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins 3 #1…

The addition of Percy and Pike in season 2 brings just about all the characters into the fray and we are nearly at a complete adventuring party. The band are still at the beginning of the journey which will launch them into timeless figures in the history of this world, but for now – it is a trip to the pub.

The legendary Vox Machina are back at it again, their entire futures are in front of them. This issue opens with the band returning from a quest and receiving a big pay out (finally) for a job well done. The party then set out on a wonderfully illustrated spending spree around the city of Westruun, where we get a refresher of all the personalities within the group. However, while the group appear to be having a fantastic time and living the high life, the supply of money they have is not infinite. The spending spree comes to an end and more work needs to be carried out.

The interesting this about this Critical Role spin off is knowing exactly how the characters sound and deliver specific lines; it is a wonderfully immersive experience for the reader to be part of. The adventures of the team at Critical Role have been the shining light in many peoples lives at the moment, waiting for the fantastic escapism of Matt Mercer and company’s adventures in Dungeons and Dragons. This addition to the history and lore of their legacy allows us to experience it in our own time while still being able to imagine everything the way it has been intended.

This issue does lead us to an interesting conclusion where we find the team about to roll for initiative… sorry I mean getting ready for a fight. The team might have found a way to make some quick money, but I am very much under the impression that it is not going to be easy and that further trouble lies just around the next page.

Rating – 9/10
