Comic Book Review – Heroes Vengeance #1

October 7, 2015 by Tai Freligh

Tai Freligh reviews Heroes Vengeance #1…

Fresh from the brand new Heroes Reborn television series, the Heroes comic will delve into the secrets of the characters. Each five-part story arc will spotlight a different character, exploring secrets behind what makes them tick.

Many superhero movies and television shows these days are inspired by their comic book counterparts, so it’s not a big stretch to do the reverse and inspire a comic book from the characters of a TV show. Heroes Reborn has done just that with the launch of its monthly comic book series Heroes: Vengeance from Titan Comics.

Senior editor Martin Eden says, “Heroes: Vengeance is the brand new tie-in comic to the Heroes Reborn TV series. We’re showcasing different characters in five-part story arcs. First up is El Vengador (past and present).”

This first issue starts to tell the back-story of El Vengador, the wrestler and El Vengador, the EVO. It paints a picture of how the two intersect and inspire. It asks the question, “what is a hero?” and explores different answers to that.

As another tool to fill in the missing details in the television show and provide a richer context to the brief glimpses we see of this character in the show, this comic series succeeds and has my interest. On a purely artistic standpoint, I’m not a huge fan of the artwork and illustrations from this first issue of Heroes: Vengeance. Everything is drawn in a too simplistic manner for my tastes, but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and see what the other issues in this first series hold. Much like Heroes Reborn, I’m going to withhold total judgement until I read a few more issues. For now, a grade of 7 out of 10, pending further review.
