Comic Book Review – Star Trek #58

June 8, 2016 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek #58…

The stunning conclusion of “Legacy of Spock”! The fate of the Vulcan people hangs in the balance as Spock tries to prevent all-out war with the Romulan Empire! Will the Vulcans find a new homeworld on which to rebuild their civilization… or does this spell the end of their species? Don’t miss the final chapter of this mini-series event celebrating the 50th anniversary of STAR TREK!

We arrive at the final chapter of Mike Johnson and Tony Shasteen’s four-part series to one of the most well-known Star Trek characters around.  You could even ask non-Trek fans, “Who is Mr.Spock?” and they would respond with a perfect description, possibly even try to impress you with, “He has a salute thing too!”, as they push a mangled hand in the air.

Mike Johnson has taken Spock Prime on a journey through this NuTrek universe and now finally we get to see if in this Universe the Vulcan race will be – once and for all – erased from existence by the ghost of Nero.

With the Romulans tearing the Vulcan vessels to pieces – in orbit above Ceti Alpha V – all Spock and Sarek can do is watch on as the Vulcan High Council have refused to ask Starfleet for assistance, due to Starfleet’s failures in coming to their aid when Nero struck their homeworld.

In amongst the numerous Vulcan and Romulan ships however is one small ship with the final few drops of Red Matter; aboard are the two remaining miners from Nero’s vessel, and each are offering their lives to strike the final blow to the Vulcan survivors.

When all hope seems lost and the Romulans are clearly overpowering the Vulcans, the cavalry arrives due to a slight incursion into the Neutral Zone.

Star Trek: Legacy of Spock is the perfect tribute to our favourite Vulcan (well half Vulcan).  We’ve seen him wander lonely within this universe, yet he’s never at any point retreated to a corner and cowered.  He’s attempted to continue his mission to broker peace no matter what the cost to his own freedom or comfort and here at the end – in the closing panels – do we see why this Vulcan really does stand so much taller than those that looked down upon because of his heritage.

If this collection arrives in a trade paperback I’d suggest you spend your money if you missed this series, as it’s one you really shouldn’t have.

Rating: 9/10
