Last week’s Through the Mirror left us at the end of two threads. Within the Mirror Universe Data was under the impression that he had located the previously assumed dead Emperor Spock, whilst over in the Prime Universe an Andorian vessel had been brutally attacked and stripped of numerous key parts – all signs pointing towards a sneak Federation ambush. With both threads clearly wrapped around each other, issue #3 of this special run from Scott and David Tipton will hopefully give us some more clues to what is going on.
Both Inquisitor Troi and Lt. Barclay are within the holodeck aboard the I.S.S. Enterprise-D, practicing a undercover mission which they shall soon be running on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. However, the Reg Barclay of the Mirror Universe isn’t as stable or as shy like the Reg we know in the Prime Universe; here we observe him here seriously putting a spanner in the Inquisitor’s plan.
With Mirror Picard running on a euphoric high, as their current raids within the Prime Universe have increased his spoils greatly, he pushes Troi’s plan forward; with that both the Inquisitor and Reg transport over to the U.S.S. Enterprise. However, the information on the Federation ship and its crew is somewhat out-of-date, as both Mirror Troi and Reg arrive wearing Starfleet uniforms that have been out of circulation for a number of years. Though this faux pas doesn’t stop them attempting to put their plan into action.
Meanwhile, a number of months back, we discover what happened to Lt. Cmdr Data when he believed he found the correct path of the presumed dead Emperor Spock.
Here in issue#3 of Through the Mirror we’re getting a small glimpse of ‘perhaps’ why Mirror Picard is doing the raids, though if this is truthfully the real reason I have to say I’m somewhat disappointed. Unlimited technology to jump between universes and they’re looting resources to secure favour and profit, due to the Mirror Universe’s dwindle stocks. Yes, there’s a bigger heist planned, but I honestly felt there was something bigger on the rocks due to the Emperor Spock storyline brewing.
Speaking of the said Emperor Spock storyline, here in this weeks release there is only a brief cluster of pages assigned to this “B Story”. Which is unfortunate really as a) I really want to see what’s going on here and b) I really like the art of J.K. Woodward.
Again, our art for the main story is delivered by another comic book artist and this week it’s Josh Hood, with colours from David Garcia Cruz. This idea to use a different artist each week is fantastic, though I have to say I’m not a big fan of Josh Hood’s Trek-style here, but I really do appreciate the fact the team behind this series is bringing in a variety of artists each week.
After being somewhat excited by the opening two issues of ‘Through the Mirror’, I feel that issue #3 has somewhat been a bit of a mild let down. Perhaps my old Trek imagination was running wild and I filled in the blanks with thoughts of a Super-I.S.S. Enterprise to take on the Emperor’s ship, that or a Borg weapon was being constructed in the Mirror Universe with the specialist equipment stolen. Instead, discovering it was for nothing more that Ferengi-like profit and favours… well, I obviously was expecting more.
