Comic Book Review – Star Trek vs. Transformers #1

September 26, 2018 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek vs. Transformers #1…

In the latest clash of the comic book titans we’re served Star Trek vs Transformers #1, something (I’ll be brutally honest) I never thought I’d see in my sci-fi loving lifetime.  Saying that, only a few years back we saw Star Trek/Planet of the Apes so it’s only right we find the the crew of the Enterprise going toe-to-toe with the robots in disguise.  It does give me hope that we’ll one day see Picard going up again Death’s Head… Yes?

The Enterprise has been called to Cygnus Seven, close to the Klingon border, as this remote Dilithium Mine has recently been reporting unwanted aggression from the Klingons and with their signal now being blocked Lt. M’Ress, Sulu, Spock and Kirk beam down to investigate.  It’s mere seconds into the away mission when the team become pinned down by Starscream, Thundercracker and numerous other Decepticons.

With the Away Team out gunned all hope seems lost until the Optimus Prime rolls out to give Kirk and Co. some cover, however Kirk is unaware of the Autobot leader’s intentions and makes a tragic mistake.

Elsewhere in the sector the Klingons are scouting a strange new Federation base, oblivious to the fact that it is actually Tryticon, and its Decepticon colleagues are just other the horizon.

I’ll be truthfully honest when this was first mooted, I didn’t know if this was stretching the Trekverse a bit to far.  Was Picard going to look silly quoting the Prime Directive to Megatron or would Kirk’s double-fist punch cut the mustard against Starscream?  I think we know that the answer would have been “Yes!”  to both.  So I was happy to see that John Barber and Mike Johnson had rather smartly dropped this tale into the ‘Cartoon Series’ of Star Trek; not to besmirch this series (though it isn’t a favourite of mine) but it does already fit rather well here.

This ‘fitting well’ does come in part to the excellent art and colours from both Philip Murphy and Priscilla Tramontano, who have perfectly captured both the look of the Transformers and the Star Trek cartoon series in this comic book.  Their work is so flawless that you cannot find any issue in what they’ve delivered; both clearly have studied the source material to bring to this comic both the look and colour scheme down to the smallest detail.  Again if IDW Publishing are looking for future Star Trek artists then please add these two to the roster.

As yet I can’t say whether I’m fully on board with the series. I appreciate the slight insanity of it all and I really do adore the look, but am I desperate to read issue #2?  Well I’m not on tenterhooks just yet.

Rating: 6/10
