Cruella sequel teased by director Craig Gillespie

June 2, 2021 by Ricky Church

After Disney’s Cruella hit theatres and Disney+ this weekend, earning $26.5 million at the US box office with $440 million worldwide, director Craig Gillespie teased in an interview with Collider the possibility of returning for a sequel with Emma Stone as a fully realized version of Cruella de Vil.

“I feel like we’ve only just met her. I’d love to now see the full-blown Cruella, fully loaded,” Gillespie said. “She’s managed to get the support system around her and she can really expand on her brand. I’d love to see where that takes her and how you could almost destroy her from inside out, if she’s not careful with all that power.”

Gillespie also added he would only return if it were with the same cast and crew including writer Tony McNamara. “If it was with this gang. It was such a joy to work with everybody, and Tony writing it, and Disney was so supportive. They really fostered a feeling of safety where we could just really go for it without the repercussions. We all were pushing it all the time and thinking, “I don’t know if Disney’s gonna be okay with this,” but they would always call and be okay.”

What do you think of a Cruella sequel? Do you see potential for a full-blown Cruella de Vil from Emma Stone and Craig Gillespie or think it should stay at just one film? Let us know one our social channels at @flickeringmyth…

Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Cruella is directed by I, Tonya helmer Craig Gillespie, and is set for release by Disney 0n May 28th. Featuring in the cast alongside Emma Stone are Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility), Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya), Joel Fry (Game of Thrones), Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Killing Eve), and Mark Strong (Shazam!).
