Crystal Dynamics boss on Spider-Man being exclusive to PlayStation on Marvel’s Avengers

August 7, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Earlier this week it was revealed that Spider-Man is coming to Crystal Dynamics’ hotly-anticipated Marvel’s Avengers video game as free post-launch DLC – although the news didn’t go down too well with Xbox gamers, given that the web-slinger will be a PlayStation exclusive.

Responding to the criticism, Crystal Dynamics’ Scot Amos has spoken to Comic Book about the situation, explaining that the decision was out of their hands and is simply down to the fact that Sony has exclusive access to the friendly neighborhood web-slinger.

“[It] comes back to the relationship with PlayStation and Marvel. When it comes down to choices of where and what Spider-Man can be, that’s a relationship question that PlayStation absolutely has the rights to, that as you guys know, with Sony’s ownership there, and Marvel with Sony saying, ‘Hey, this is something we can do. This is something we can do on this platform.’

“[We] love the idea of being able to bring this character to the PlayStation players. People will get fixated on one thing as opposed to, ‘Oh by the way, you’re going to have hundreds of hours of content and years of storylines coming ahead of us, and new worlds and regions, and new heroes, and more stuff we haven’t even announced yet.’

“But I really do think people will look at this and say, ‘Yeah, okay, we get that, we can understand the business behind that’, but in general, we’re making this game for everybody. We want this to be the place you get to play those superhero fantasies out with your Avengers team, that continue growing with new characters, characters you ain’t even guessed at yet.”

The decision shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise, given that Sony has control of the Spider-Man movie rights (and is currently “sharing” the character with Disney and Marvel Studios for inclusion in the MCU), and recently released Insomniac’s Spider-Man video game exclusively on the PS4. And of course, Xbox owners will still have an impressive roster of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at their disposal when the game arrives this September. Still, if you’re on Xbox, let us know if you’re disappointed that you won’t get to swing around as Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers…

Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a new, hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. The celebration turns deadly when a mysterious enemy causes a catastrophic accident which results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, a sprawling adventure ignites when a determined young woman named Kamala Khan sets out to reassemble and rebuild the Avengers to stop the unchecked power of the secretive new force known as AIM.

Marvel’s Avengers is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia and PC on September 4th 2020.
