David Ayer says his cut of Suicide Squad “is f*cking amazing”

October 23, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

While the release of the first trailer during the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con International met with much enthusiasm and excitement from fans, it’s now widely accepted that Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Suicide Squad failed to deliver on its early promise.

Like a number of DC projects – most notably, Zack Snyder’s Justice League – Suicide Squad didn’t have the smoothest of journeys to the big screen, with Warner Bros. demanding reshoots and recutting director David Ayer’s original vision for the movie’s theatrical release.

Following the news that Zack Snyder has been given the opportunity to put together the mystical Snyder Cut of Justice League for HBO Max, Ayer has spent some time recently lobbying for the ‘Ayer Cut’ of Suicide Squad to be made available to fans. And it seems this has prompted him to revisit the original version of the film, as he’s taken to Twitter to describe it as “fucking amazing”.

I took the hits like a good soldier when the studio cut hit the streets. It’s who I am.
I watched my cut for the first time since it was abandoned.
It is f*cking amazing. On God.

I felt guilty for years like I f*cked. Nope. It’s fire. It’s the tone of the Comicon trailer 100% https://t.co/sFlFiGW5yN

Unlike Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which was left in an unfinished state and is apparently costing up to $70 million to complete, Ayer’s cut of Suicide Squad is believed to be all but complete and so would be relatively easy for Warner Bros. to put out should the studio decide to do so. At the moment there doesn’t appear to be any plans however, but as we saw with Justice League and the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, anything is possible.
