David Harbour to play Trautman in John Rambo

April 20, 2026 by Gary Collinson

Baker Team has found its Covey Leader, with THR reporting that Stranger Things and Thunderbolts* star David Harbour is portraying Major Sam Trautman in the cast of Lionsgate and Millennium’s First Blood prequel John Rambo.

Harbour steps into the Green Beret of Richard Crenna, who portrayed the then-Colonel Trautman in the original three Rambo films opposite Sylvester Stallone as John J. Rambo. That role now passes to Noah Centineo (The Recruit, Street Fighter), who will presumably find himself recruited, trained and commanded on tour of ‘Nam by Harbour’s Trautman in what is described as an origin story for the iconic character.

John Rambo is being directed by Jalmari Helander (Sisu) from a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam), while Sylvester Stallone is on board as an executive producer. Also EPing are Anthony and Joe Russo, who are fresh off working with Harbour on Marvel’s upcoming superhero blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday, where the actor reprises his role as Red Guardian.

Alongside Noah Centineo and David Harbour, the cast of John Rambo includes Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong. Filming wrapped last month, but as yet there’s no word on a release date.
