Jessie Robertson reviews the thirteenth episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 2…
Legends of Tomorrow Producer: “yeah, I can’t think of a good title, either.”
The Captain is back! This episode was basically a “detour episode” where the main plot of the season doesn’t move along but we venture into an isolated situation. Here, Rip was taken prisoner by Sara; but after merely a few moments, he executes an override command to Gideon and has control of his own. His play is to steal the compass and destroy which he does but that’s about as far as he got. Speaking of that scene, there’s a weird moment where the crew is trying to get control of the Waverider as Hunter walks into the Captain’s quarters and steals the compass. I may be a novice on the ship layout but is the captain’s quarters not directly behind the bridge of the ship? Anyways. The ship crashes (in a spectacular sequence for TV) and a part is lost, a Delineator. It’s needed, Gideon says. Well , they are back in the Cretaceous period (hence the episode title) so the crew splits to find the missing par while the rest use a Time Masters technique of venturing into someone’s mind to make the necessary changes, or in this case, change Rip back to his old self again (even though I’m not quite sure how he became who he was).
This is a pretty mundane episode of Legends; Mick serves up one-liners like hamburgers at Rally’s while Sara and Jax fight dopplegangers of the crew (in Rip’s mind) and Ray tries to cock block Nate from Amaya, saying it will ruin history. Legends can’t preach to me anymore about what messes up history and what doesn’t; that ship has long since sailed far away. I quite enjoy Nate on the show; I enjoy his bromance with Ray and I’m enjoying his romance with Amaya. It has so much more charm than Ray and Shiera did last year; no forced chemistry like they had. Amaya’s character progression has been quite good this whole season and she was given as Nate so eloquently put it “such a moment of epic badassery” tonight when she communicated with an angry T-Rex named Gertrude. (don’t you love when shows go back to the Dinosaur era, they always find a T-Rex and literally no other species?)
8/10- I’m giving a slightly higher grade than The Flash just because this show didn’t abandon it’s logic in storytelling because it rarely uses any and for the few very cool moments it provided.
Other Notes:
– Gideon in real life was cool and her kiss (and remembering the kiss) with Rip was one of season 2’s better moments….that and when Ray tells Rip he “almost ruined Star Wars.”
– The women tonight were owning it with confidence, kicking butt and turning heads. When Amaya tells Nate she’ll give him something else to think about, I had to open a window!
– Quick question: Why didn’t Ray bring his Atom suit to find the Delineator? He could have flown into that nest and retrieved it quickly. And what of the time passage here? Ray’s group has to camp overnight while inside you can’t leave Sara and Jax hooked up inside Rip’s mind more than an hour or they can’t leave?
