Deadpool tracking for $55 million opening weekend; bigger than X-Men, The Wolverine and X-Men: First Class

January 22, 2016 by admin

We’re only a couple of weeks away from The Merc With a Mouth hitting cinema screens in his feature-debut, and The Hollywood Reporter is tracking a good opening weekend for Deadpool.

If the outlet is to be believed, Deadpool is currently tracking to earn $55+ million on its opening weekend, when it goes up against Zoolander 2 and How to be Single. If that turns out to be true, Deadpool will have had a bigger opening than Bryan Singer’s original X-Men ($54 million), X-Men: First Class ($55 million) and The Wolverine ($53 million).

Zoolander 2 is currently tracking $20+ million, while How to be Single will likely take third place overall.

Deadpool‘s $55 million won’t break any records for February, as last year’s Fifty Shades of Grey opened to a staggering $93 million on Valentine’s Day and its unlikely The Merc With a Mouth will hit those levels. However, it will better Kingsman: The Secret Service, which opened to $41 million.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Deadpool is set for release on February 10th in the UK and February 12th in the States and sees Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of the Merc with a Mouth alongside T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Weasel, Morena Baccarin (Gotham) as Copycat, Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6) as Angel Dust, Ed Skrein (Game of Thrones) as Ajax, Stefan Kapicic (24)  as Colossus, Leslie Uggams (Roots) as Blind Al and newcomer Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
