Denis Villeneuve would like to adapt Dune Messiah after Dune: Part Two

October 28, 2021 by Liam Waddington

With Warner Bros. officially greenlighting a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune earlier this week due to a very successful weekend at the box office, it seems like the director doesn’t want his adaptations to stop after just two movies.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Villeneuve revealed that after he has wrapped up production on Dune: Part Two, he would also like to adapt the second book in the series, titled Dune Messiah.

“I always envisioned three movies,” Villeneuve shared. “It’s not that I want to do a franchise, but this is Dune, and Dune is a huge story. In order to honor it, I think you would need at least three movies. That would be the dream. To follow Paul Atreides and his full arc would be nice.” He added, “[Frank] Herbert wrote six books, and the more he was writing, the more it was getting psychedelic, so I don’t know how some of them could be adapted. One thing at a time. If I ever have the chance to do Dune: Part Two and Dune Messiah, I’m blessed.”

Although Villeneuve would be interested in developing a potential third film in the series, there will most likely be no confirmation from Warner Bros. or Legendary on the future of the film series until  Dune: Part Two – which is currently scheduled for an October 20th, 2023 release date.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and sees Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) leading the cast alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Dave Bautista (Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgard (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education), and Chang Chen (The Assassin).
