Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond taps Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight as screenwriter

August 1, 2025 by Ricky Church

The next generation of James Bond 007 films are one step closer to coming to fruition. Amazon MGM, the new owners of the Bond film rights, revealed today that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been hired to write the script for Denis Villeneuve’s 007 film.

James Bond has been one of the longest-running cinematic franchises for over 60 years, based on the espionage thriller novels by Ian Fleming. Beginning in 1962 with Dr. No starring the late Sean Connery as the iconic spy, a total of 25 films have been produced by Eon Productions. The last film, No Time to Die starring Daniel Craig as Bond, was released in 2021.

For decades, the Bond franchise had been under the stewardship of Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli until their decision to sell the rights to Amazon MGM last year with full creative control. The future of the Bond franchise has been up in the air since then with initial reports describing a rift between Broccoli and Wilson and Amazon began when the studio wanted to create an expanded universe for the franchise with multiple TV series tied to the new films.

It was only a few weeks ago Denis Villeneuve was chosen to direct the next iteration of Bond, which will reboot the franchise after Craig’s closed set of films. With Knight now writing the script, the next step for them and Amazon is choosing who will play James Bond, which is one of the most coveted roles in the industry any time it becomes available.

Knight most recently wrapped production on the Peaky Blinders feature filmThe Immortal Man while Villeneuve is directing Dune: Part Three. A decision on the next Bond actor will not be made until after Villeneuve is done on Arrakis and Knight has completed The Immortal Man.

Producing the new Bond film will be Amy Pascal and David Heyman for Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films with Tanya Lapointe executive producing.

What do you think of this Bond news? Does Knight’s role as writer with Villeneuve directing give you more confidence in the Amazon generation of 007? Let us know on our social channels at @FlickeringMyth…
