Disney said to be considering simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ release for Black Widow

January 13, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been made to wait, but Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally set to launch this week with the Disney+ premiere of WandaVision, followed by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in March, and – if all goes to plan – Black Widow in May.

Originally intended to kick off Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in May 2020, the Scarlett Johansson-led solo movie is scheduled to open in cinemas a year later than planned due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, with much of the world struggling to get a grip on the virus and under varying degrees of lockdown and restrictions, it’s starting to look unlikely that theatrical exhibition is going to be ready to resume in just a few short months.

As such, studios are starting to reassess their plans once more, and with MGM said to be close to pushing No Time To Die from its Easter date, Variety is reporting that there’s been some talk that Disney is considering shifting Black Widow to a simultaneous theatrical/streaming release under the Disney+ Premier Access model of the upcoming Raya and the Last Dragon (i.e. the $29.99 price tag we saw for Mulan).

The trade goes on to report that Disney insiders are denying the rumours, although they also denied reports that Pixar’s Soul was heading to Disney+, which of course it did – as part of the standard subscription – on Christmas Day. Read into that what you will.

Do you think Disney and Marvel will delay Black Widow again? Is it time to move it to streaming? Let us know your thoughts on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

Black Widow is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and sees Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) as Yelena Belova, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff/Iron Maiden, Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) as Dreykov and Olivier Richters (The King’s Man) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.
