Don Cheadle says War Machine’s story is “pivotal” to Captain America: Civil War

January 26, 2016 by Justin Cook

With so many core Marvel Cinematic Universe superheroes set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, including Captain America, Iron Man and Black Widow, it’s easy to forget that a long list of more minor characters will be popping up as well.

On this list is Don Cheadle, who began playing James Rhodes/War Machine after Terrence Howard didn’t return for Iron Man 2. The actor has always been a reliable supporting character in the MCU, but the size of his role in Civil War has been hard to gauge based on the footage from the film that has been released. But now, thanks to an interview with Cheadle, his exact role in Civil War has become a bit more clear.

Cheadle was promoting his directorial debut, Miles Ahead, which is being screened at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, when he revealed an interesting bit of news to SuperHeroHype. He said, “I never know what it’s going to be and they keep their cards very close to their breast with Marvel. I never know where the character’s going to go, but he’s become more and more and in the next one, you’ll see that what happens to Rhodey is a little bit more intense and pivotal to what happens in the rest of the stories.”

In the trailer for Civil War, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man can be seen holding Rhodey’s unconscious body while looking frustrated and angry, so perhaps Cheadle’s character will serve as some sort of motivation for Stark after he is severely injured in a battle with Captain America and his crew. It’s all just speculation at this point, but that would certainly fit Cheadle’s description of the impact of his role and it fits in with a rumour that came out last week.

Civil War will be the actor’s fourth Marvel movie, following his work in Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability.
