Edgar Wright to write and direct movie based on shadows for DreamWorks Animation

November 21, 2015 by William Fanelli

Edgar Wright has just signed on to co-write, as well as direct, an animated feature based on the concept of shadows. The project, which will be co-written by David Walliams, will be in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation.

This yet-to-be-titled forthcoming shadow-based project will mark the Hot Fuzz director’s first fully animated feature film. As Deadline reports, it is not a reworking of the long-delayed Me & My Shadow but rather an original idea wrapped around the same basic shadow concept. “Edgar will spearhead a new approach to this fascinating concept, and we’re ecstatic to have him onboard as director along with David as co-writer,” said DreamWorks Animation’s Co-Presidents of Feature Animation Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria. “We’ve always been intrigued by a film concept involving shadows, and now with Edgar’s signature comedic style and abilities as a natural storyteller, audiences will be treated to a truly captivating and energetic tale.”

Wright is becoming a very busy man these days. Just last month, it was announced he will be teaming up with Johnny Depp for an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s children’s book Fortunately, the Milk. The project will see Wright directing a script by Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords, with Depp starring and producing. Also on the filmmaker’s docket, is Baby Driver, starring Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jamie Foxx Ansel Elgort and Jon Hamm. That film follows a young getaway driver who is coerced into working for a crime boss where he ultimately becomes involved in a doomed heist. While Fortunately, the Milk doesn’t yet have a release date, Baby Driver is expected to arrive in March of 2017.
