Edge of Tomorrow opens to a disappointing $20 million

June 2, 2014 by Luke Owen

It has been praised by the majority of cinema goers and critics, but it looks like the competition was too tough for Edge of Tomorrow to overcome.

The film is yet to open in North America (due to a slow pre-sale), but the overseas takings for Tom Cruise’s latest sci-fi blockbuster has been a very disappointing with just $20 million in 28 markets. The film made its strongest showing in Asia, but is yet to open in China, Japan and South Korea where it is expected to do well.

Released by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow, Edge of Tomorrow cost $178 million.

The film was always going to struggle, and the proof is in the pudding as Disney’s Maleficent took $170.6 million worldwide and 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past has just crossed the $500 million mark.

Here in the UK, Edge of Tomorrow opened to $3.1 million, which is vastly down from Cruise’s last sci-fi outing Oblivion, which opened to $7.1 million last year. Disney’s Maleficent took $11 million.

Edge of Tomorrow is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) and the cast also includes Emily Blunt (Looper), Bill Paxton (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood), Tony Way (Game of Thrones), Kick Gurry (Tangle), Franz Drameh (Attack the Block), Dragomir Mrsic (Snabba Cash II), and Charlotte Riley (World Without End).
