Elle Fanning joins Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown with Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbaro

May 16, 2023 by Ricky Church

Deadline reports thgat Elle Fanning (The Great) will star alongside Timothée Chalamet (Dune: Part Two) and Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown from director James Mangold (Logan).

A Complete Unknown will follow Dylan, played by Chalamet, at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival as he transitioned from his folk music to electric guitar, a move that divided his fans but cemented his legacy as one of the greatest musicians of his generation.

Fanning will play Sylvie Russo, a university student and artist who was romantically involved with Dylan in the early 60s while Barbaro will play Joan Baez, a folk singer and activist who performed at the festival that year.

A Complete Unknown was written by Mangold and Jay Cocks (Gangs of New York) with Searchlight Pictures producing. Chalamet recently revealed he will perform Dylan’s classic songs himself for the film.

Dylan will executive produce the film while Mangold and Dylan’s manager Jeff Rosen will produce alongside Veritas Entertainment Group’s Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer and Peter Jaysen, Automatik’s Fred Berger and The Picture Company’s Alex Heineman. Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Andrew Rona will also executive produce.

A Complete Unknown will begin production in New York this summer.
