Ethan Hawke talks nearly playing Doctor Strange: “I came as close as anybody could”

January 6, 2015 by admin

Several names were linked to the role of Doctor Stephen Strange before it was officially announced as Benedict Cumberbatch, including Joaquin Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. One of the names often rumoured was Ethan Hawke (Boyhood), which was only furthered when his Sinister director Scott Derrickson was announced to helm the movie.

In an interview with MTV’s Happy Sad Confused Podcast (via CBM), Hawke said that he came, “as close as anybody could” to nabbing the role of Doctor Strange. But even though he missed out, he would be keen to take on another Marvel role.

“There’s a tremendous amount of salesmanship that’s now really important to a studio like that,” he told the podcast. “It’s a tremendous amount of time in your life where you’re working, and you’re not acting. We’re living in the age of Marvel. They’re making movies at a high rate, and they’re making them successfully. I’m totally open to doing something like that.”

Are you sad that Ethan Hawke didn’t get the role of Doctor Strange? Who would you like to see him play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister) with Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) playing the titular role. The movie is set to be part of Marvel’s Phase Three and will be released on November 4th, 2016.
