UPDATE: Fantastic Four clobbered at the box office, opens behind Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

August 9, 2015 by Gary Collinson

It was predicted on Friday, and now it’s official: 20th Century Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four has been clobbered at the North American box office, pulling in just $26.2 million on its debut weekend to place second behind Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation on $29.4 million.

Struggling against horrendous reviews [read ours here and here] and word of mouth, the $120 million-budgeted Fantastic Four’s opening is the lowest for a Marvel branded movie since 2012’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance ($22 million), and the eighth-lowest ever after Blade ($17 million), Blade: Trinity ($16 million), The Punisher ($13.8 million), Elektra ($12.8 million), Howard the Duck ($5 million) and Punisher: War Zone ($4.3 million).

SEE ALSO: Sources say Josh Trank’s “combative behaviour” is to blame for Fantastic Four’s failings

For comparison, Tim Story’s Fantastic Four opened with $56 million back in 2005, with the 2007 sequel Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer debuting to $57 million in 2012.

UPDATE: The international numbers are now in, with Fantastic Four making $34.1 million internationally, for a global opening weekend of $60.3 million.

Fantastic Four sees Josh Trank (Chronicle) directing a cast that includes Miles Teller (Whiplash) as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara (House of Cards) as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Jamie Bell (Nymphomaniac) as Ben Grimm/The Thing, Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Doctor Doom, Reg E. Cathey (House of Cards) as Dr. Storm, and Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Harvey Elder/Mole Man. Listen to the Flickering Myth Podcast review of the movie using the player below:
