Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw sequel won’t be happening any time soon, says producer

March 2, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Back in 2019, the long-running Fast & Furious franchise expanded with its spinoff movie Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw and while the film ended with the opportunity for a sequel after Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw defeated Idris Elba’s Brixton, one producer has offered a disappointing update on the project.

In an interview with Collider, producer Kelly McCormick revealed that the planned sequel is currently on-hold as not only is there currently no script, but Dwayne Johnson’s schedule is too busy for a sequel at this time.

“Everybody’s really busy on that particular franchise. I mean, who’s busier than Dwayne Johnson? And, he’s critical to the project. We’re just waiting to hear, to be honest. I think it’s something that would be awesome to continue, but I think everybody’s just been so busy working on projects in the COVID of it all, that we’re still waiting to hear… There’s a lot of excitement to try to make something.”

While there is no plan for a Hobbs & Shaw sequel at this point, F9, otherwise known as Fast & Furious 9, is currently scheduled to debut on May 28, 2021, followed by two more instalments to bring the main series to an end with Fast & Furious 11.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw was directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2) and saw the return of Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs), Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw) and Helen Mirren (Magdalene Shaw) alongside franchise newcomers Idris Elba (Luther), Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan), and Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver).
