Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw gets an updated title

December 23, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Having postponed Fast & Furious 9 in favour of the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham-headlined Hobbs & Shaw, Universal Pictures has now announced an updated title for the first spinoff movie in the blockbuster action franchise.

As reported by Collider, the film – directed by David Leitch of John Wick and Deadpool 2 fame – is now going by the official title Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

Given how lucrative the brand has become, with over $5.1 billion in box office receipts to date, it’s certainly no surprise that Universal wants to get Fast & Furious in the title. And with just two movies left in the main series (apparently), it also wouldn’t be a shock if the studio looks to further expand the series with more spinoffs under the ‘Fast & Furious Presents‘ banner.

David Leitch (John Wick, Deadpool 2) is directing Hobbs and Shaw, which will see the return of Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs), Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw) and Helen Mirren (Magdalene Shaw) alongside franchise newcomers Idris Elba (Luther), Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan), and Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver). It is set for release on August 2nd 2019.
