Final Fantasy VII Remake trailer revealed at State of Play

May 10, 2019 by Ricky Church

During Playstation’s latest State of Play episode, a new trailer was revealed for the highly anticipated, but much delayed, Final Fantasy VII Remake. Not only that, but the trailer also promised more updates regarding the game to come next month. Watch the trailer below…

Released in 1997 for the original Playstation console, Final Fantasy VII is often regarded as one of the greatest video games of all time and revolutionized RPGs with its gameplay and high-quality graphics at the time. It proved so popular among video game players and fans of the Final Fantasy franchise that it later spawned the multimedia series Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, a collection of spin-off games and prequels that delved further into the world of Midgar. The most notable inclusion to the series was the feature-length direct-to-video film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, a sequel to the original game.

Final Fantasy VII followed Cloud Strife, a mercenary who joins an eco-terrorist group to fight against Shinra, a corporation that is draining the life energy from their planet. Their mission brings them into conflict with Sephiroth, a super-soldier who aims to ultimately destroy the planet and become the most powerful lifeform. Sephiroth is often considered to be one of the best villains in a video game and certainly one of the most memorable within the Final Fantasy series.

Final Fantasy VII Remake has been in development for years after being first announced in 2015. It has faced several delays and developer Square Enix ultimately brought it back to their company to work on in-house. One form of release which was talked about in 2016 was an episodic format, making the remake a multi-game release so the development team wouldn’t have to cut out large parts of the story or world of the original. From the look of the trailer, the remake will feature gameplay mechanics similar to the current Final Fantasy games, utilizing real-time gameplay as opposed to the original’s style of turn-based action.

With more information coming next month, hopefully we’ll get a possible release date or at least release window for this highly anticipated game.
