Flickering Myth’s Greatest Comic Book Movies: #11 – Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

April 15, 2013 by admin

Throughout April, we’re counting down to the release of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 with our picks for the Greatest Comic Book Movies of All Time; here’s #11…

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 2010.

Directed by Edgar Wright.
Starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh and Jason Schwartzman.

Based on the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series by cartoonist Brian Lee O’Malley, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World stars Michael Cera as a young musician who meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), but in order to win her heart he has to do battle with ‘The League of Evil Exes’ – including a former Superman in Brandon Routh and the current Captain America in Chris Evans.

Despite being well received by critics, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World struggled to connect with audiences upon its theatrical release and ultimately went out with a whimper at the box office, earning just $47 million on a budget of $60 million. However, there was plenty love for British filmmaker Edgar Wright’s Hollywood debut in our voting – so much so that the comedy just missed out on a place in our top ten by the narrowest of margins.

Edgar Wright will soon join Chris Evans as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the director finally set to bring his long-in-development Ant-Man adaptation to the screen by kicking off Phase Three of the MCU on November 6th 2015 – at which point Evans will have reprised the role of Steve Rogers for two further Marvel adventures in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers 2.

Keep up to date with our entire countdown here.
